Thanks for stopping by to check out the Bowflex TreadClimber machine. Bowflex makes two different models of the TreadClimber, the TC100, and TC200.  In this review, I will walk through the product features, benefits and if there is anything I do not like I will point that out as well.  TreadClimbers are a unique product from Bowflex, and I am looking forward to introducing them to you.

Bowflex TreadClimber Machine

Bowflex has been making fitness equipment for about 30 years, and they are one of the most innovative companies in the market.  You may be familiar with them from the TV commercials with the home gyms and their Power Rod technology.

Bowflex does not only make home gym systems; rather they are in a lot of different equipment areas, including elliptical machines, treadmills, as well as other products, including the TreadClimber.

Summary: The Bowflex TreadClimber is a unique machine built for walking.  This offers a great way to get your low impact walking workout, on an innovative machine from Bowflex.

The TreadClimbers are designed for walking and for a lot of people, walking is a great low impact way to workout.  As with all fitness equipment, this is not a one-size-fits-all machine.

I think these machines are great for what they are designed for which is walking. You can check out my post about walking for lower back pain.

I have written about many products offered by Bowflex including the elliptical machines, home gyms, HVT (hybrid velocity trainer), and the Max Trainer series.  I think TreadClimbers are an excellent option for people with back or knee problems as well as anyone else who is looking for a great low impact workout.

Who can benefit from using the TreadClimber?

I really think a lot of people can benefit from this unique walking machine, including:

  • People looking for low-impact exercise
  • People with bad knees, bad backs (like me), or joint problems
  • Folks who live in a climate that is either too hot, too cold, or too wet to get out and walk
  • Anyone who wants to change up their workout and add variety
  • Maybe you live in an area that is not well lit, or not conducive to walking after dark

I am sure there are many others as well, but you get the idea.

There are some fundamental aspects of the two TreadClimber models that are very similar, and there are some key differences as well.

First, let’s talk about the similarities between the two models, then I will point out the specific features of each unit.

Let’s get right into this!

TreadClimber similarities

  • Introducing the Treadle

Bowflex has incorporated what they call a “treadle” (tread pedal) which is an individual treadmill for each foot that moves like an elliptical.

It was designed to give you the feeling of a treadmill and a stepper, with the low impact feature of an elliptical.  The unit employs shocks to help cushion your steps for a low impact as compared to a traditional treadmill or stepper.

The shocks absorb your steps and cushion your joints, which is excellent for a low impact exercise.  You can adjust the cushioning of the shocks to fit your style of walking.  If there is not enough, or too much cushion, you can adjust that by changing the settings on the dial.

An excellent place to start with the shocks is with the arrows aligned and then adjust the dial, clockwise or counter-clockwise to change as needed. When you get the settings to your liking, you may want to make a note of your settings, if you have multiple users.

  • Handles

There are two sets of fixed handles to hold onto while walking.  One set extends on the side of the machine for better stability while walking.  The other set of grips is upfront, by the display and includes the handgrip heart rate sensors.

  • Owner’s manual

Okay, normally I wouldn’t point out the owner’s manual, but there is a ton of useful information included here.  There is information on getting started, stretches to perform before a workout, and post-workout cool-down exercises as well as a workout log and schedule. It is recommended you start with a minimum of 30 minutes 3 times per week.

There is also a Body Weight Loss Guide complete with exercise and food options to help you achieve your weight loss goals.  So, there is a lot of great stuff in the owner’s manual.

  • Maintenance

Routine maintenance is part of owning home fitness equipment, so you will need to keep an eye on your new machine to keep it functioning correctly.

  • Daily – check for loose, broken or damaged parts
  • Weekly – check for smooth roller operation, remove any dirt, dust or grime
  • Monthly – Make sure all bolts and screws are tight.

Also, the walking belt and deck will need to be lubricated from time to time.  The manual has instructions that will guide you through this process.  I highly encourage reading the owner’s manual; again there is a lot of good stuff in there.  Do not be too scared by this lubricating process, at most, if you are a heavy user; the manual recommends performing this step once a month.

  • Media shelf

There is a large media shelf that you can use with a book, tablet, e-reader or whatever your device of choice is.  You can watch your favorite shows on your tablet or read a book while you walk, without the fear of running into someone.

A built-in USB charger will help you make sure your device doesn’t run out of juice as you are working out.

  • Portability

The TreadClimbers come with transport wheels on the back of the machine, a great feature if you want to relocate the machine.  I don’t know how often you will want to do this, since the unit does weigh over 150 pounds, but that is an option if you want it.

  • Assembly

Now for the fun part…assembly.  I enjoy this kind of stuff, but I realize not everyone does.  You should plan on spending a few hours building this unit and Bowflex recommends two people to put it together.  If you choose, Bowflex does offer in-home assembly, so depending on how handy you are, and your budget, that is an option as well.

A couple of things to consider with assembly

  • Choose a location for the machine that will be close to an outlet, as you will need to plug the TreadClimber machine into an outlet. The cord is about 6 feet long, so keep that in mind
  • Make sure you have enough headroom when the unit is operational
  • You will want to make sure the machine is stable, using the levelers on the bottom of the machine
  • You may want to invest in a machine mat for the TreadClimber to sit on; this will help protect your floors.

Now let’s take a look at each of the TreadClimber models and discuss what each has to offer.  First up, The TC100 is the entry-level model.

My Recommendation

I feel that the TreadClimber TC100 offers a lot of value for the price.  You get the same basic function as the TC200 but at a much lower price point.  You can’t go wrong with either model, but if you are up for saving some money and still getting a high-quality machine, I recommend buying the TC100.

Yes, you will be missing out on some of the built-in bells and whistles that come with a higher-priced machine, but if you are looking for functionality and value, I say go with the TC100.

  1. Good article. One concern is the strength of these home gyms. The one’s at the gyms we pay for are usually stronger built than say treadmills at home. It is good that it does say there is a weight limit of 300 lbs for the average person. What type of warranties are available for these machines?

    • Thanks for your comment, I appreciate it. The equipment at a gym takes a beating. It’s kind of like a rental car, people are not as careful when it doesn’t belong to them 🙂

Yes, you definitely hit the nail on the head with the weight limit on the home gym equipment. Bowflex Treadclimber TC100 comes with a two-year warranty and the TC200 comes with a three-year warranty. These machines are solidly built. But as with anything with a lot of moving parts, won’t last forever. Thank you for stopping by, let me know if you have any more questions.

  2. I was actually considering one of these for my mom. I’ve seen the commercials I don’t know how many times and know that Bowflex is an awesome product with a great reputation. Do you know if it does in fact burn more calories than a traditional treadmill or elliptical?
I think the basic would be a great option for my mom (especially with the much lower price tag). I really like the fact too that it’s low impact and is always at home ready to be used on the days she can’t make her workout classes. Great review-thanks!

    • Thanks for your comment Jennifer. I think these are great for people who want a low impact workout. As I mentioned in the review, it is also great if you live in a climate that is not great for getting outdoors.

As for the calorie burn, Bowflex references a study (Source: University of Wisconsin (TreadClimber, 2011) and Adelphi University Study (Stair Climber, 2004) when they talk about the calorie burn of this unit versus a treadmill. The study is centered on walking at the same speed on both a Treadclimber and a treadmill. Bowflex claims the Treadclimber will burn up to 2.5x the amount of calories as a traditional treadmill, when walking at the same speed. Of course individual results will vary. I do really like the motion of this unit and I think the design is conducive to a great low impact walking workout.

  3. Several years ago I had a bowflex home gym. I was very happy with the quality of it. It was very expensive, though. But, the quality of bowflex products are very good. It’s been almost 10 years and the home gym isn’t falling apart or anything.

However, I have been looking for a treadclimber. I have sore knees from running and would much rather use a treadclimber to help save my joints. I have used a waverunner at the gym in the past. But, they are like 6 to 10 thousand dollars for a good one. More importantly, I want to save my body from hurting for hours the next day after doing cardio.

I did have a question about these treadclimbers. Is it possible to purchase a longer warranty? It looks like the warranty is for 2-3 years. However, I would gladly pay for a 5-10 year warranty.

    • Thanks for your comment Garen. I understand the need for a low impact workout. Running can really take a toll on the body.

As for the warranty, Bowflex offers a three year and five year upgraded warranty option. Now the TC100 comes with a two year on the machine and 90 day warranty on labor. The TC200 comes with a three year warranty already on the machine, and same 90 day labor warranty.

The upgraded warranties give you three years parts & labor, or five years parts & labor, so you definitely have options.

Thanks again, let me know if you have any more questions, I am here to help.

  5. Wow! This seems to me like a game changer especially for people who gets stressed out due to their working hours and would not be able to take a walk in the morning or at night. Getting this Bowflex treadclimber might be the key. Atleast, one can quickly take a walk in the morning before work and when you come back home, you engage in the walk again. The TC100 looks sophisticated enough and also considering the price, its perfect.

    • I agree with you, this machine is great for folks who work a lot and don’t have time to get out for a walk.  Having a machine like this in your home is a great way to get a low impact workout.  I often go for walks just to clear my mind and give my brain a break from the computer.  I think the Treadclimber is less intimidating than other exercise equipment also, it’s just walking.

  6. Nice article you write man. Nowadays everyone wants to build a good body. I also want to build a good body. I read your article fully. I know Bowflex Treadclimbers are expensive. But the quality of Bowflex Treadclimber quality is good. So I tell my father to get this Bowflex Treadclimber. I like to stay in the home always. So, I like to work out out at home. And Bowflex Treadclimber will help me a lot for work out. Now I have a question for you “is it have any battery for using it without electricity?

I agree with you, Bowflex offers great quality and value and this innovative machine is no different.  Please let me know if you have any more questions, I am happy to help.

  7. The Bowflex brand is a well-known brand where I am from and they have quality equipment. This treadclimber machine is a unique way to get a solid workout and from your review, appears to be an excellent investment. Just the design tells me this machine means business.

What immediately attracts me to this machine over the design is that is a way to get a low-impact workout in that will not hurt your back (I have back problems too as you have). The price is steep, but you have something that will last for years and can be used at all times of the year right inside your home gym…

The features such as their ‘treadle’ which helps cushion the impact of your steps, the handles and the media stand that you get are all pluses for me. The minus might be having to assemble the thing once it reaches your house. The wheels to move it are nice, but I will not be moving it much at that weight other than to clean under and around it from time to time.

Of the two models, they are similar other than a lack of features in the lower price model. I like that lower price and do not need all the modern features that younger people might consider necessities these days. Thanks for the very clear and concise review of them both, heading to the sales page now.

    • Thanks for your comment Dave, I appreciate it.  I agree with you unless you absolutely have to have the additional features, the TC100 will definitely get the job done.

I love the low impact aspect and I do a lot of walking anyway.  Walking is great for me, it gives me time to step away from the computer, helps me to refocus and burn some calories.

This Treadclimber is a great investment for people who love to walk but may need something indoors.

Thanks again for stopping by, and please let me know if you have any questions, I am happy to help.

  8. Hi Steve,
You did a great job with this review. If I was a few years younger and could afford it, I would be very tempted to get one. I like the fact that they are kind on the knees and joints.
Having a machine at home is a good thing as one could fit in a bit of exercise without leaving the house, especially if the weather not good.

    • Hi Jill, thanks for stopping by. I agree this machine is a great low-impact way to exercise right in your home. I think this machine is less intimidating than other exercise machines on the market, in that it’s just walking. You don’t have to run and you can really go at your own pace.

I walk a lot, it gives me a break from work, helps me refocus on the things I need to get done, and I get a workout while I am walking. I think the low-impact nature which is easy on the joints is just a great feature.

  9. This is actually very much what I am looking for. Low impact exercise due to knee injury. I use similar machines a lot at the gym and find that they are more effective than regular walking and, as odd as it sounds, less damaging impact wise.

Having one at home, more time to work out as I can enjoy the match or watch a movie while working out.

    • Hi Derek, thank you for stopping by. This machine is a very low impact design and is great for a lot of people who are recovering from injuries. I love your idea of watching a movie while you walk, that is definitely a great benefit of having a Treadclimber in your home. Thanks for your comment, please let me know if you have any question, I am happy to help.
