Welcome! I was recently introduced to Built Bar protein bars, and I decided to write a comprehensive review. I am not sure introduced is the right word to use. I honestly don’t know how I found out about Built Bar, but that is beside the point.  Stick around as I share my thoughts and see if Built Bar is right for you.

There are so many different protein bars out there, and I have tried a lot of them.  Some are pretty good, some are downright awful.  Protein bars come in different textures, some are chalky and dry while others are chewy.  Either way, it’s hard to find the right mix when it comes to a protein bar.

Built Bar protein bars

I was immediately drawn to the Built Bar by the low-calorie nature and high amount of protein.  A lot of low-calorie protein bars don’t taste good, at least in my experience. Finding a healthy protein bar that tastes good can be quite challenging.

I wasn’t sure what to expect but wanted to give it a go anyway. I tend to get bored with my same old protein bars and wanted to spice things up a bit.

I started out with a 10 bar sample box which is a variety pack including:

  • Banana Chocolate Crème
  • Vanilla Chocolate Crème
  • Mint Brownie Delite
  • Peanut Butter (woot woot)
  • Salted Caramel Chocolate
  • Orange Chocolate Crème (2 bars)
  • Coconut Almond
  • Raspberry Chocolate Crème
  • Double Chocolate Mousse

There are other flavors as well, and you can see those on the website. I am not a massive fan of chocolate-covered fruit, so those particular bars are not my favorite. But if chocolate-covered fruit is your jam, these might be for you.

I do really like the chocolate, though, probably to a fault. So, it goes without saying that I love the more chocolatey bars, like Salted Caramel Chocolate, Double Chocolate, etc.

Nutritional info

Most bars are 15g protein 110 calories, but some, like peanut butter, have more calories but are also higher in protein. For example, the bar I ate today, Salted Caramel Chocolate, has 110 calories, 15g of protein, 6g of fiber, 4g of sugar, 4g of fat, and 13g of carbs.  For you macro counters out there, these are pretty solid numbers.

Built Bars are also gluten-free, have no preservatives, and are made with natural flavoring.  Oh yeah, and they are made with 100% real chocolate (my favorite)!

How long does a Built Bar last?

Since I am new to the Built Bar protein bar, I was curious to see how long they last.  I have purchased other protein bars in the past, and they get hard and dried out after time. Since Built Bar is having a Black Friday sale, I wanted to order some and stock up.

I took to chat on the website, and the customer service reps have told me that Built Bars will last six months on the shelf (room temp) and nine months in the freezer.  I will never leave them sitting that long to test this out, but it’s nice to know.

How does it taste?

Okay, so this is where the rubber meets the road.  As with anything, some people like Built Bars and some who don’t.  As I mentioned before, I am not a fan of chocolate-covered fruit, so the fruity bars are not for me.  I much prefer the more complete chocolatey bars.

At the end of the day, it’s all about personal preference.  My recommendation is to try the variety pack and see what you think. If you decide you want to buy more, then pick and choose the flavors you like.

Some people don’t like the consistency, and I will tell you the bars leave a little something on your teeth.  They are kind of gooey, like toffee, but maybe gooier, but I like them that way.  So if you are going out for a photo shoot, make sure you eat your bar ahead of time, LOL.

I prefer the bars cold, even frozen and they keep for a long time this way too.

What’s in a Built Bar?

Built Bar uses whey protein isolate because it is a complete protein, and the version they use does not contain casein or lactose. Whey protein isolate was chosen over other protein options.

Built Bar uses high-quality dark chocolate and is considered one of the “secrets” of Built Bars.  Another essential ingredient is gelatin, which is from animal protein.

The bars use only natural flavors and no coloring and have no artificial preservatives.  You can read the complete nutrition information here.

How to buy Built Bar protein bars

You can purchase Built Bars directly from their website.  You can buy a variety pack, or you can build your own order, which is what I have been doing.  Built Bars come in an 18 bar pack, so you want to be sure you are going to like the flavors.  I can pick and choose which bars I want to buy.

Before writing this Built Bar review I ordered directly from Built Bar, which seems to be the best place to get them. I have heard they are for sale other places, but I didn’t even look elsewhere. Freshness matters, and the freshest you can get is generally direct from the source.

There are a wide variety of flavors, so get yourself a starter pack or a variety pack and see which ones you like.

Built Bar Pricing & Promotions

Shipping

Built Bar offers free USPS priority shipping on all orders in the US. Now I will warn you it does take some time to process the order, at least that was the case when I was ordering for this Built Bar review. That was one negative about Built Bar. Shipping may be faster now.

It will take about one week from when you order until your order arrives. So, if you are getting low, you want to make sure you order ahead of time.  But, good things are usually worth the wait. Built Bars are shipped within 2-4 days after production.

I was pleasantly surprised when I received text updates on shipping. I also got a code for 20 % off my next order if I included Built Boost, which I highly recommend.

Customer reviews

The reviews on the website are very positive, actually all 5-star reviews, hmm :).  Some people have called the bars a “healthier alternative to candy.”

The reviews on Google are mixed but mostly positive.  A few people have had problems with customer service. I have chatted with customer service reps and have had only positive interactions.

Pros:

  • Low-calorie protein bar
  • Wide variety of flavors available
  • No GMO
  • No wax
  • No artificial colors, flavors or preservatives
  • Each bar is calculated to have three WW SmartPoints

Cons:

  • Contain animal protein, not vegan or vegetarian-friendly

Conclusion: Built Bar protein bar review

Built Bar protein bars are a low-calorie high protein bar. These bars can serve as a great snack or meal replacement.

My experience has been very positive, and I love the variety of Built Bar flavors available. The bars do take a little getting used to with the gooey center.

If you are a chocolate-covered fruit lover, these bars might be right up your alley.  If you like vanilla, coconut, peanut butter, etc. there is something for everyone. As for a chocoholic like myself, there are also plenty of great tasting bars to choose from.

      • Hi Toni – You may be able to Built Bars at local stores. Unfortunately the Built Bar site doesn’t have a list of brick-and-mortar retailers that sell them. If you do find a store local to you that has them, please do stop back here and let us know. I’m sure there are others out there who would like to know where they can be found.

Stay safe, and have a great rest of your weekend!

  1. I first saw the Built Bar when someone was making a free advertisement for the product after she really enjoyed it. I felt that this was very positive because it is not that usual for a person to use a product and go to their social media to advertise it. Coming to your website now, I can truly accept that it is a very good product judging from all the features like low calorie, etc. I want to buy one for myself and see how it tastes.

  2. Hi, protein is a bodybuilders best friend and many are serious enough about the sport to spend lots of money on protein bars and shakes.

if this is you, then choosing the right protein bar can give you an advantage over your competition.

like you said, some protein bars have more protein than others. Some have more sugar and calories.  It gets scientific after a while.

    • Hi Jake!  Yes, there is definitely science involved and it’s too much for my little brain to process :).  I will just stick to eating these yummy Built Bars and go with that.  For a low-calorie protein bar, Built Bars have a good amount of protein. Thanks for leaving a comment, I appreciate it.

  3. Steve,

I read through your site and you have been through a rough time with back pain. It’s probably one of the most debilitating pain that one can experience.

The Built Bar Protein bars look pretty tasty.  I’m a chocolate fan too and would like some of the flavors.  It’s also handy to have them on hand at work for a nutritious snack.  I’m not much of a meat eater so I get protein from other sources like fish, chicken, and beans.  The pros definitely outweigh the cons. I’m wondering if the Built Bars are available in stores?  I saw them indexed on Walmart’s website but didn’t see them in stock.
