Is Noom A Scam? An Inside Look

Today I want to answer a question I have been getting lately, is Noom a scam? It seems like every time you turn around there is a new diet promising amazing results. In this post, we will take a closer look at Noom and see if this popular diet program can help you lose weight.

People have many different reasons for losing weight.  Some folks need to lose weight for health reasons, while some people just want to live a healthier lifestyle.  Whatever the reason, there are a lot of diet plans to choose from.

Calories play a significant role in weight loss, and ultimately, losing weight comes down to taking in fewer calories than you burn. There are a lot of diet programs out there that promise they have the secret to weight loss by eating this or avoiding that.  You can also find a lot of “crash” diets that are generally not sustainable. Sure you may lose some weight, but chances are you will put all the weight back on.

What is Noom?

That brings me to Noom, a mobile health platform developed by a team of health professionals.  Noom takes a different approach to weight loss and is more of a lifestyle change than a diet program.

Is Noom a scam?

Based on my personal experience, I do not believe Noom is a scam. You can see my full review here.  Noom is an innovative program designed to help you not only lose weight but keep it off long term, no gimmicks or shortcuts here honestly though it’s a lot of common sense about eating healthy.

Getting started with Noom is easy with the 14-day trial.  Download the app and walk through a series of questions about your goals.  You will be up and running in no time. You will need to enter your credit card information and choose a price plan (more on that later) when you sign up, but you can also cancel before the trial expires.

How does Noom work?

After you have downloaded the app and answered the questions, you are ready to roll.  You will start tracking the food you eat using Noom’s extensive database of food options.  Food tracking is an integral part of the program as this will help to identify trends or patterns in your food choices. Once you have a few days to see your trend, Noom can help you make better choices when it comes to food.

Each day, you receive articles that talk about things like food triggers.  The articles are beneficial, and you can save them for later if you want to refer back. Some people feel like this is information overload, but I found the small bits of daily information easy to understand.  After each article, there is a short quiz to make sure you know the material.

You will learn about what causes food triggers and how you can manage them.  Like if you are at a party and everyone is eating fabulous hors d’oeuvres, Noom can help you make it through a social food trigger.

Or, if you are like me and after a rough day of work, want to eat junk food, Noom can help with that kind of trigger also. Learning about the psychology behind our actions is fascinating.

Noom food categories

Noom focuses on water-rich foods that are low in calories, high in volume to help fill you up.  Take grapes vs. raisins, for example.  One cup of grapes has about 62 calories while that same cup of raisins has about 500 calories.  The same food, in two different forms, has a vast calorie difference.  Grapes contain more water, and will fill you up more than raisins; these are the types of things Noom will help you learn.

Noom breaks foods down into color-coded categories, green, yellow, and red. Food in the green category should make up the majority of your diet.  Foods in the yellow group are okay in moderation and food in the red category, are okay in small amounts.

You don’t have to give up the foods you love, but you do need to practice moderation. Here is my example. I like potato chips.  It’s okay to eat a serving size bag of chips (red food) and pair that with some lunch meat (yellow food).  I love deli meat too, so it’s a win-win for me.

Noom coach

A coach will be provided to help you along the way.  The Noom Coach is one of the features that sets Noom apart from other diet programs out there. If you have questions or need help choosing food, your coach is there to help. Some people have said the coach is slow to respond, others have had great success.

Does Noom really work?

This is kind of like asking if the gym really works.  Noom gives you the tools you need to meet your weight loss goals and maintain your desired weight. Just like the gym, though, you have to put forth the effort to achieve your goals.

That is where your coach comes in handy.  Your Noom coach serves as your go-to when you are struggling with food choices, or if you just need some extras motivation.  So, if you are willing to put in the effort, Noom can help you achieve your goals.

Canceling Noom is easy

If you decide you want to cancel, you can do so before your 14-day trial is up and pay nothing.  Canceling is very easy; you can follow my instructions here. I signed up for the 14-day trial and had no problem canceling.  Just remember to cancel before your 14 days are up. There is no grace period or refunds.

This is the point where some people are calling Noom a scam, saying they tried to cancel and couldn’t. Some people have said they tried to cancel after the 14-day trial period, but their credit card was charged.  Yes, this will happen; you have to cancel before the trial expires.  Again, I had no problems canceling and received a confirmation.

How much does Noom cost?

There are a variety of price plans available, from monthly to annually. The longer you commit, the less expensive on a monthly basis.

  • 4-month auto-recurring plan $129 USD
  • 6-month auto-recurring plan $149 USD

You are free to cancel and will have access to Noom for the duration of your billing cycle. There are no refunds issued.  You will need to choose a price plan when you sign up for the 14-day trial, but if you cancel, you will not be charged except for the trial fee.

Conclusion: Is Noom a scam?

My experience was positive, and I do not believe that Noom is a scam. Don’t expect magic, though; it does require you to put forth the effort to achieve your weight loss goals.

Noom gives you all of the tools to succeed. They educate you on making smart choices when it comes to food; you are provided with a coach to help you along the way.
