Foam rollers come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, and you can find them at your local sporting goods store and gym.  Today I want to introduce to you the TriggerPoint GRID foam roller, a personal favorite of mine.  Foam rollers are a mainstay in the exercise and fitness community and offer a lot of benefits.

Why use a foam roller?

Foam rolling helps to keep soft tissue (fascia) that covers your muscles healthy. When this tissue is stressed, it can tear or adhere together (adhesions), and this prevents muscles from working correctly.

Using a foam roller helps you with a technique called self-myofascial release.  Self-myofascial release puts pressure on the adhesions and breaks them up.  This process of applying pressure and releasing that pressure also increases blood flow to the area, which brings oxygen and nutrients.

Benefits of foam rolling

Foam rolling is a great way to roll through the knots and kinks that get in the way of feeling great and moving well.  Rolling before a workout can help achieve optimal movement and after a workout to help to speed up the recovery process.  Also, using a foam roller may help improve range of motion, and reduce fatigue.

Another great aspect of foam rolling is that you can do it yourself.  You don’t have to rely on someone else to massage you.  Foam rolling also puts you in control, you can adjust the pressure by positioning your body differently.  You know what feels good and what doesn’t, so this puts you in control.

The problem with other rollers

I have tried a lot of different foam rollers over the years, including a more traditional foam roller, the long black standard foam roller. I found that a standard foam roller is just not firm enough to get as deep as I like, and these types of rollers tend to break down more quickly with a lot of use.

I tried PVC because I wanted something harder than a standard foam roller and, well, because I thought it would be cool to try it.  One thing I learned quickly with using PVC, it doesn’t work well on hard floors or on the carpet.

PVC slides around a lot on these types of surfaces, which can do more harm than good.  You have to make sure you are on a surface like an exercise mat or something that has some traction to it.

I quickly learned that sliding around on top of PVC is not the best way to roll out my tight spots.  There has to be a better way, and this is where the GRID foam roller excels.

I own this foam roller and use it a lot.  After years of back pain, my problem areas are my hips, hamstrings, and glutes. This roller helps me out tremendously.

The GRID foam roller from TriggerPoint has a hard, hollow core and is wrapped in EVA foam.  The roller is more firm than a traditional foam roller and has just enough give for me.  It’s not super hard like a piece of PVC pipe (more on that later), which is nice.  The GRID roller is firm but not too firm.

I was looking for a hard foam roller, but not too hard. Something that would also dig in where and when I needed it to.  The surface of the GRID roller is excellent because it is three dimensional, which really helps to get deep knots.

The foam surface has a variety of different zones, including high spots and flat areas. These different patterns help you with hard to reach knots. If you have some stubborn knots, you can focus on those with the bumpy part of the roller.

What I like about the GRID Foam Roller

  • Firmness
    The roller is firm yet soft enough that it doesn’t hurt me. I really like the hard, hollow core, which has just enough bend but is firm enough to hold its shape and provide excellent compression.

    The GRID foam roller measures 13 long by 5.5 inches wide, so it doesn’t take up a lot of room. The GRID is easy to take with you to the gym, or when you are traveling.  You can put your socks and underwear in the middle when you are traveling, so it’s easy to pack around.

If you are in the market for an affordable and effective foam roller, I encourage you to give this one a try.  I have been using this roller for a while now, and I think it is well designed. It’s durable, and it doesn’t slide around on hard floors.

I used my GRID on wood floors or my exercise mat, and it works great on either surface.

I have found that a standard foam roller is not hard enough for me, and using a piece of PVC pipe provides a different set of challenges, like sliding around.  I think GRID is the right combination of both.

    I have a foam roller that I have used almost every day for the last 4 years. It is one of the best personal investments I have ever made.
    It is great for rolling out most of my body once I am warmed up but also effective for after a workout too.
    I don’t have this particularly foam roller but the one I have is similarly firm, durable and about a foot longer than this.
    I definitely believe that more people should use foam rollers.
    I have tried this GRID foam roller before and it is effective too.
    The next time I am in the market for a foam roller this will be the one I will try out.
    Do you find that using a foam roller is more, equal or less beneficial for your body than stretching?
    I find that it is a combination of both a consistent stretching routine and foam rolling routine that get the best results for my body.

    • Thanks for your comment, I appreciate it. There are different factors that play into foam rolling vs. stretching. If you are short on time, I think foam rolling is the better way to go. If you are stretching cold muscles your body will go into a defensive mode and freeze up your muscles, which can lead to injury. When you are using a foam roller, you are engaging muscles so you are already doing some exercise when you are warming up with a foam roller. After a workout using a foam roller helps to relieve the tension built up in the muscles. Stretching helps to improve muscle length and range of motion, but so does foam rolling.
