I have been suffering from back pain for about 20 years, and I am always on the lookout for low impact ways to exercise.  This unit from Bowflex has a lot to offer someone like me, with low impact yet dynamic movements.

Bowflex has been designing innovative fitness equipment for many years.  This multidirectional unit allows you to engage your body the way you would in everyday life.  The LateralX LX3 moves in three directions to give you a low impact, full body workout.

LateralX LX3 Dynamic Movement

Moving laterally adds a new dimension that a traditional elliptical does not offer.  This is what makes this unit so unique.  Functional workouts are all the rage right now and for a good reason.  This machine is designed to help you move in dynamic ways, and activate the muscles you use every day.

So, let’s get right to it!

Workout programs

The LateralX LX3 offers seven workout programs to choose from.  This wide variety of workouts will keep you from getting bored and will help to improve your overall fitness level.   With eight levels of resistance, you will not outgrow this machine either.

LCD Backlit Display

The 7.5-inch display will show you all the vital stats you need during your workout.  You can adjust the resistance, or change workout modes on the fly.  The easy to read display is very user-friendly and has the option to set up two user profiles.LateralX LX3 display

LateralX LX3 Handgrips

There are to sets of handgrips which allow you to change up your workout when you see fit.  The inner, fixed (or static) handgrips have builtin heart rate sensors, and you can change the resistance level with the push of a button.

The upper handlebar moves back and forth so you can get a full body workout with this machine.  Depending on how you want to exercise, the different handgrip options allow you to do different things.  For instance, you can hold onto the fixed grips, and lean back into a squat position to focus on your glutes.

These handgrip options allow you more freedom to customize your workout.

Bowflex LateralX App

In addition to the built-in work out programs, download the free app (iOS and Android), and you will have access to twenty full-length high energy, Instructor-led group classes designed to kick your butt no matter if you are a beginner or a workout guru.  Also, there are ten bonus videos to keep you extra engaged!

With Bluetooth 4.0 the app will easily connect to your tablet or another device allowing you to set goals and track your progress.  You can even see your improvement with a monthly view of your workouts.

There is also a 12-week workout program, which is free of charge.  The LateralX App connects with popular fitness apps like Myfitnesspal, Google Fit, and Apple Health.

Pedals

The pedals are large enough to fit a variety of shoe sizes and are designed not to slip.

Fixed lateral range

The LateralX LX3 has a fixed lateral range, meaning you will not be able to adjust the lateral movement.  Adjustable lateral range is available in the LX5 model.

Other features of note

  • Levelers will help keep the machine level and firmly in place while you are using it
  • Water bottle holder
  • Transport wheels and handles make moving the LateralX possible, although it is pretty heavy

Assembly

Well, if you like to build things, this is right up your alley as you will need to assemble the LX3.  Having a helper is ideal, so you can spend some quality time with a friend or loved one as you build this unit.  Okay, kidding aside, I would plan on taking a few hours to get this machine up and running.  Or, if you would rather, you can pay for in-home assembly which is also available.

Conclusion: Bowflex LateralX LX3 Review

Pros

  • Dynamic, low impact workout
  • Multidirectional movements
  • Free LateralX app with 30 workouts
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Seven workout options built-in

Cons

  • The app is not dynamic, it repeats the same exercises
  • This is a heavy machine to move

I hope you have enjoyed this review! I have used lateral trainers in the past, and it’s pretty amazing how much differently they work than a traditional elliptical machine.  I was getting bored spending too much time on an elliptical, and then I stepped on a lateral trainer.

I am in pretty good shape, but this machine added a whole new element to my workouts. I really feel like the lateral work is excellent because it engages more muscle groups.  Functional training gets a lot of headlines these days, and this machine can help you reach your goals.
